The eyes have it

Our eyes caught each other and for a split second lingered. We both knew what the other was thinking. For some inexplicable reason, out of nowhere, we both had an urge, one that was so powerful be both knew where it would lead - despite the risks.

Hana had knocked the door some 3 hours earlier with a bottle of white wine in one hand, while Ben and Keane followed her in. They hadn't shared transport, but had a canny knack of arriving together for these sort of things. The four of us had been friends for several years and we decided we should all get together for a chance to catch up. We were supposed to make up a group of six, but my wife Nancy had been called into work to cover a night shift and Hana's partner Geoff had a similar excuse.

The evening started off as many others had, a warm hug from everyone, a heartily filled glass of wine, some savoury nibbles dotted about the room at strategic points and background music eninating from the CD unit in the corner. Ben had met Keane about 6 months previous in a gay bar in town and they were both eager to update me on their latest gossip. Already they had been on holiday together and despite being 30 somethings, both acted like teenagers in the back row of a cinema, touching and kissing at every opportunity.

As the evening wore on, the conversation increasingly relied on Hana and I to continue each topic as the boys became more and more touchy feely with each glass of wine. As 10 o'clock came and went, they both decided they would head home early, their intentions were clear as we politely waved them off.

As the door closed, the atmosphere became more relaxed and casual. Hana collected the glasses and moved into the kitchen to wash them up, while I collected the dishes and swept up the crumbs. Conversation continued at a higher volume as we exchanged questions & answers between the rooms, but lowered again as I took the dishes through to the kitchen and placed them on the side unit, just as Hana turned round to grab the tea towel - and that was the defining moment.

There had never been anything between Hana and I, we were just good friends. We didn't even get flirty with each other, but in a split second all that changed. Her brown eyes, sparkled as they looked straight at mine - almost through me. Her long wavy light brown hair rested over her shoulders and a hugh spark of electricity flowed through the two of us. The feeling was amazing and it made me tingle all over at an intensity I'd never felt before. For a split second we were both mesmerised, then our lips came together.
